To the South :

The most famous route will take you to the Parque Natural of Cabo de Gata. Tke the coastal road to Carboneras- which in itself is worth a visit - and pass Carboneras in the direction of almería, but when the main road turns to the right carry straight on to Agua Amarga. On the way there, nearly on top of a hill, you will find a little sign leading you to Playa de los Muertos. Allow youselves the time for a short walk to the 'mirador', and look dwon onto 1,5 km of nearly Caribbean beaches. Agua Amarga has a charming little bay, fringed by caves. From there you will have to get on to the motorway, as there is no through-road along the coast and then take the next exit to Campohermoso passing it in the direction of Las Negras. Then pay a visit to the old gold-mining town of Rodalquilar. Continuing towards San José, again on top of the hill, there is another mirador to your left which gives you a splendid view of the famous Isleta del Moro. Coming down that road there is a turn-off to Los Escullos. Behing the two restaurants you will find amazing formations of white rocks and a castle.
Carry on to San José. At the beginning of town is a trun off to the right, leading you through thousands of catii to the nearly virgen beaches of Genoveses and Mónsul. Returning, you may need a break, and the little harbour of san Jsé offers bars and restaurants.
You will have to take the same road out of S.J. but this time turning via Ruescas to Cabo de Gata. You will find the famous lighthouse, the salt-mines and a bird reserve hopefully with lots of flamingoes.
Taking the motorway back to Mojácar, you will pass Níjar, a mountain village on your left. It is the best place to look at and buy the jarapas ( little handwoven rugs ) and ceramics, for which this area is famous. You may also visit the manufacturing places.
Allow yourselves at least eight hours for this spectacular excursion, giving yourselves time for short walks and a meal.
